Three County events played with only one success
for Haverhill in the past week and that one coming from the most
unexpected quarter. The Hambro Cup away game at The Suffolk was
always going to be difficult but after being two holes down at lunch
a further one added during the afternoon session meant the end of
the line for this year. At Coupals Road in the Tolly Cobbold Cup,
the home team held a slender one hole lead at the halfway stage but
it was the visitors, a young Woodbridge team, who played for
position and swung the match in their favour, returning to Ipswich
with a three up victory.
The Cranworth Cup, played by the ladies, uses a
slightly different formula. Instead of foursomes all day, the second
session switches to singles matchplay, and nobody really expected
Haverhill to go to Woodbridge and win, but with a three-point
lunchtime lead the six visiting players added a further two points
to the differential to record a 25 - 20 points winning margin. Linda
Bugg lost several balls throughout the day but, along with Marion
Kendall, both achieved a maximum of five points in the singles, and
Pat Kennedy was only half a point shy of the same total. Considering
three matches had to give away five shots during the singles
segment, Haverhill deserved a result which will now see them
rewarded with a home match against either Felixstowe Ferry or
Gorleston.
During the week the Seniors played two home matches
against Fynn Valley and The Suffolk. Both resulted in wins for the
home team by 6 - 2 and 4½ - 3½. Ex World Champion table tennis
player John Leach may be turned 80 years of age, but he still enjoys
competing. This reflected in his efforts at the 119 yards, eighth
hole, where his seven wood tee shot was despatched straight into the
cup for an ace during his weekly round.

Of the three club matches played there were two wins
for the Juniors, at Home, to Bury St. Edmunds and the Ladies, also
at Coupals Road, against Ufford Park in the Weston Trophy. In a
closely fought match the final result being 3 games to 2. In the
opening Curry Cup game, Haverhill travelled to Harwich and, on a
very tight course, lost out by 15 points to 6.
The Peggy McGhee Cup was a team event and was won
by Gordon and Sheila Price who played alongside Derek Thomas and
finished with 109 stableford points. The runners up with 106 points
had to be decided on countback and this went in favour of Pat
Kennedy, Bill Lancee and Josh Brown over Pam Smith, Ian Smith and
Craig Sisson. The £162 raised on the day has been donated to the
main Charity Classic fund which this year will support McMillan
Nurses.

The 36 hole Foundation Cup competition was building
up to an exciting finale after day one but ended up being a bit of a
damp squib after some torrential downpours and flash flooding at
Coupals Road.
After the first eighteen there were 16 players
under par which included one lady in the form of Pam Smith but was
to reduce by one with the overnight disqualification of Daniel
Edwards for an administrative error. All of the field started on day
two but less than 50% returned cards as the round was interrupted
because of extreme weather conditions. The event is due to be
rescheduled in the near future.
On Friday the visitors to Haverhill were the
Newmarket NAGS who managed the one win in a 5 - 1 defeat to the
local Seniors in a 4BBB match.
The final of the Mixed Foursomes, which had started
last October, was played on Friday afternoon. Mick Harrington and
Marilyn Parmenter soon took charge and going down the 11th fairway
they were three holes up against Eamon Bareham and Frances Smith.
From that stage on though there came a reversal of fortunes as Eamon
and Frances hit top form and turned a potential rout into a 3 &
1 win.

Last weeks match results did not make the best of
reading for the Haverhill club members, six games played and only
one won. After losing 6-0 away to Girton mid week the Seniors
recorded the only win when they beat Cambridgeshire Moat House 4½-3½
on Friday at Coupals Road. The ladies took two defeats, both at
home, as they lost first to Stowmarket by 3-1 and then 4-0 against
Waterbeach.
The Suffolk Under 14s organiser, David Duffel,
could not remember the Suffolk Boys beating the home club at
Haverhill before but Sunday's result was 6½-5½ in favour of Suffolk.
Harry Mills, who is in the Suffolk squad, played for the club on his
own course and at one stage was five holes down before putting in a
sustained effort which saw him walk off the 18th green two up. Full
marks also to Haverhill's Daniel Poulton who was playing in his
first club match. Fully aware the whole result hung on his game, he
kept trying but to no avail, finally losing out by two holes.
Saturday's Stenson Trophy match against Bury St.
Edmunds was all square after the morning foursomes but a mini
disaster in the following singles saw Haverhill exit the
competition.
Pam Ratford and Marilyn Parmenter returned 41
stableford points in the ladies Tunisian Salvers event which was
three ahead of runners up Pam Smith and Theresa Spittle. The winning
pair now go to Saffron Walden where they will play in the regional
finals.
Another pair also off to a regional final are Wendy
Wilderspin and Ted Fairhead victors of the local heat of the Douglas
Bader Cup. Four points clear of Steve Nichols and Pam Ratford
(36pts.) and one further in front of third pair Eamon Bareham and
Shirley Andrews will see them at Ely City later in the year.
Saturday's Yellow Tee Stableford saw Helen Rankin
take the ladies prize for the second successive week. Andy Softley
also achieved the same feat winning the higher men's section whilst
Steve Lowe took the lower.

Haverhill men's teams had a double win last week in
County competitions played at Coupals Road. The first visitors were
Gorleston, who faced the Seniors in the Parks Trophy which is a 4BBB
event played over 18 holes by teams of eight players. Paul Loomes
and Roger Campbell got the local team of to a good start, winning
their match by three holes and with the next two pairs also adding
four and a further five holes respectively, it all added up to a
positive twelve up at end of play.

On Sunday it was a change of partner for Paul Wallace
when he teamed up with Tim Farrant in the Tolly Cobbold Cup. Again,
this was a team event, but this time the discipline was foursomes.
Flempton were the opponents, and it was only a slender margin of 4
holes which saw the Coupals squad leading at the half way point. A
tactical change of order for the afternoon session saw Haverhill
pick up 6 further holes, which ensured a place in the next round of
this knockout competition against Woodbridge, who came away from
Gorleston with a narrow 2 hole victory.

Mid week the Seniors travelled to Royston and were only
one game short of a whitewash in a 4BBB match. The result was 7
games to 1. Steven Moye and John Whittaker took the two sections of
the Yellow Tee stableford, whilst the Ladies competing in the Weston
Trophy against Diss fell at the last hurdle. The match ended all
square, but a sudden death hole saw Haverhill into second spot.
A healthy field of Juniors took to the first tee on
Saturday lunchtime playing in the Spring Cup. Five handicap Ryan
Wingate produced a very good round of 64, some six shots below par,
but had to settle for second spot in the medal event to Josh
Dashwood, who returned a massive 17 under par score of 53. Harry
Mills, Aaron Tokley, Tony Weller and David Spittle also returned sub
par cards.
Three stableford points separated the winner and
runner up in the second section. Paul Tabrar had 49 points against
Jack Warwick's 46 points. Leah Nichols led in the girls group with
the Wasdall sisters Laura and Melissa in close pursuit. On a hot
afternoon, the two youngest and smallest girl competitors, Paige
Burgess and Hannah Mills ,both completed their rounds returning full
cards.

Saturday saw a rerun of the inaugural competition
for 'The Captain's Trophy' which had been abandoned three weeks
earlier due to high winds which had brought down trees on the
course. The event is for teams of four led by Past Club Captains and
the scoring is the best three stableford points recorded at each
hole.
Despite having to draft in a super sub. in the
shape of John Kennedy, as Andy Craig was unavailable, the team of
'84 and '87 Captain, Doug Renyard returned a level par score of 108
thanks to some good golf from Michael White and Tim Farrant along
with John. It was fitting that the trio left the last putt to their
Captain who made a three footer which relegated Jim Walker, Peter
Carter and Bill Lancee who accompanied Eric Kiddle, into second
spot. Third place on 106 went to Dickie Woolmer who's team was Louis
Woolmer, Tony Bird and Paul Loomes. Other leading scores were:- 106
Nichols,Chapman, Turley & Cohen 104 Turner, Klingle, Spittle
& McGarr, Campbell, Sargeant, Wallace & Tarrant 103 Webb,
Ranson, Thomas & Parris 93 Pollitt, Pollitt, Gordon &
Layland.
The men's Winter Foursomes Final was played shortly
before the Captain's event and in a closely fought round it was
Peter Garner and Mark Stanton who came out on top. The final result
was 2 up over Gordon Price and Derek Thomas.
Sandwiched in between these two competitions was a
Hambro trial match against near neighbours, Saffron Walden. Five
prospective pairings for Hambro selection competed and the result
was a 4 - 1 win for Haverhill with both duos of Robert Scott/ Andy
Bareham and Andy Fish/ Andrew Underwood finishing four holes up in
their individual games.
Whilst there was all the above activity on the
course the popular Saturday, Yellow Tee Stableford returned. Tim
Daniels with 40 points took the low section and with one more point
it was Andy Softley who captured the higher group. The ladies winner
was Helen Rankin.
Kevin Eldred booked his place in the regional
finals of the Lombard Trophy on Sunday morning when he shot a nett
62 medal round. In June, Kevin will go to Bishops Stortford and play
alongside Club Professional Nick Duc in a 4BBB in which they will be
looking for a score to get them to the National Finals at San
Lorenzo in the Algarve.

On Saturday, following their election earlier in
the week, the new Haverhill Golf Club Men's and Ladies Captains
hosted the Drive-In which was a 4BBB competition.
There were many winners on the day for side events
such as the longest drives and nearest the pins, but the overall
winners were Robert Scott and Graham Spencer, who returned a massive
50 point stableford card.
A consistent Robert, aided by an explosive Graham,
who recorded birdies at the 4th, 5th and 11th holes, saw them six
points clear of runners up Mick Rickett and Jason West. In third
spot, two shots back, came Jim Thomson and Mark Pickup. The leading
scores were:-

A Seniors men's team visited Newton Green on Friday and
came away the losers, in a 4BBB match, by a 5 & 3 margin whilst
on Sunday the Ladies entertained Fornham Park Ladies at Coupals
Road. Fornham, no strangers to Haverhill, lost out by 4 games to 1.
Wednesday saw the gathering of the majority of the
mid week medal winners of the previous twelve months all looking to
become a Champion. Conditions on the golf course were ideal for low
scoring, but it was John Kennedy who was the clubhouse leader for a
long time with a level par 70, only to be denied victory when Terry
Lyons, in the last group out, came in with a four-under 66. Terry

Wednesday at Coupals Road saw the finalists in the
IFF Challenge take to the course all aiming to capture the winner
takes all prize. Conditions were generally pretty miserable as the
players combated wind, cold and hail storms which brought an
irregularity to the putting surfaces.
A few handicap strokes appeared to have been
helpful as the highest on the day Pat Mansfield returned a two under
par score which was one too many for Mark Pickup who finished runner
up. Paul Gardiner with a level par 70 was third. The leading scores

Two club matches were played during the week and both
were against Saffron Walden. The Ladies travelled on Thursday and
came home with a 3½ games each halved result whilst the following
day the Seniors playing 4BBB ran out the winners by 5 games to 3. It
was the last match for the Senior's Captain Dave Elliott and by
coincidence the first for his Walden opposite number, Grant Walshe.
There are not many holes in one recorded by
Haverhill Ladies so Heather Eldred's ace at the 113 yard second
during Saturday's stableford was exceptional. The club used by
Heather being a 7 wood.
Mixed foursomes was the format for that afternoon's
competition sponsored by Berenger Vineyards. Looking for a high
number of stableford points to qualify for the regional finals the
field was led in by Andy and Lynn Fish with 37. One shot in arrears
were Eamon Bareham and Frances Smith whilst Graham and Pat Kennedy
were one further back in third. Other scores being:-

Sunday's round at Coupals Road was the Rosebowl
Final, when the winners of the previous twelve months medals met to
find a Champion. The strong, squally winds had not abated so
conditions were not easy and a level par 70 was good enough to win
and this was on countback.
Joe Davis just held on from Andy Softley who
actually eagled the last hole but still had to settle for the runner
up spot. A further stroke behind in third place was Russell Gritty.

The second semi - final of the Winter Mixed competition
was won at the weekend by Mick Harrington and Marilyn Parmenter.
Playing against Graham and Pat Kennedy they ran out as winners by a
5 & 4 margin and now face Eamon Bareham and Frances Smith in the
final.
On Saturday Haverhill Ladies exited the 'Mail on
Sunday' event going down at home by four games to none but there
were smiles all round for one competitor later in the day when the
Club's ex Captains and their teams played in the inaugural
'Captain's Trophy'. Unfortunately played was halted late in the
round after the gale force winds toppled several trees but not
before Fred Webb played the 119 yards, par 3, eighth hole. Despite
members of his team crediting the wind as a more than useful aid, it
was a well struck wedge that saw the ball despatched straight into
the hole for an ace. Now Fred is hoping he can repeat the feat on
Saturday 10th April when the teams will attempt to complete the
competition.

The Captain's Special Event was the featured
competition of the weekend at Coupals Road and was a 4BBB stableford
with a shotgun start. 43 points was the winning score and the top
two pairings could only be split on countback even then a final
decision went as far as the back six holes.

The wintry weekend weather saw the loss of Sunday's
competition with the main event over the two days being the previous
evenings presentations for the major prizes competed for through the
past year. Presided over by Club Captain Sean Tarrant, the task of
handing across the trophies was taken on by his charming wife,
Denise.
That morning the last yellow tee stableford of the
winter was played and the winners were Jim Thomson, Brian Bentham
and Doreen Darbey. Also decided were the final placing in the Merit
League, which had been running alongside. Dave Cohen's 53 points
gave him top spot being three clear of Brian Bentham. Peter Garner
(48 points) was third and a further point back came the tied pair of
Tim Daniels and Jim Thomson.
The ladies Rose Bowl final, in which the years
medal winners competed to find an overall Champion, was won by Ann
Thompson with a score of 69. The following three players, all on 73,
whose positions were decided on countback were Mary Sail, Kathy
Bowman and Sue Carr. Other scores were:- 75 D.Walker 79 L.Fish,

The Touchwood Cup, which is the men's winter
foursomes match play event, has produced two pairs of finalists.
Peter Garner and Mark Stanton, who overcame Robert Cramsie and Paul
Brierley in the quarter - final, recovered after a mid round crisis
against Tim Farrant and Geoff Bush to step into the final on the
back of a 4 & 3 victory.
Farrant and Bush were always behind but after
pulling back to just one down at the 11th they were unable to
sustain the effort in the closing holes. Opposition in the final
will come from the consistent Derek Thomas and Gordon Price who
disposed of Paul Wallace and Roger Campbell in the other semi -
final.
The 'Mail on Sunday' team travelled to Hintlesham
Hall on Saturday and came up against a very good home squad who went
along way in last years competition. The final score was 3½ to ½
points with Glen Norris's half being Haverhill's only success.

The Saturday 'Yellow Tee' stableford saw Dave Cohen
take the higher section and amongst the lower handicappers it was
Eric Kiddle who crept home on countback. Eric's 39 points being the
same score as Gordon Price.
Foursomes golf is the format of the men's winter
knock out competition, 'The Touchwood Cup', and it was an excited
Peter Garner along with partner Mark Stanton who filled the
remaining vacant spot in the semi final line up, following a narrow
2&1 victory over Robert Cramsie and Paul Brierley. They now face
Tim Farrant and Geoff Bush whilst the other semi will be between the
Derek Thomas - Gordon Price partnership and Paul Wallace and Roger
Campbell.
The equivalent mixed event is also approaching the
same stage where Steve Nichols and Pam Ratford line up against dual
summer knockout winner Eamon Bareham and Frances Smith. Waiting for
the opposition to appear in the other half of the draw are Graham
and Pat Kennedy.
No strangers to foursomes golf are Denise Walker
and Stella Renyard who had an extended run in the Daily Mail
Foursomes two years ago. Again on Saturday they qualified to become
Haverhill's representatives in the k.o. stages of the event when
their 29 stableford points won the local heat. In windy conditions
putting was at a premium and it was only one point that separated
them from runners up Wendy Wilderspin and Kathy Bowman. In third
spot a further point away were Pauline Calmet and Heather Eldred.

The mid week snowfall put paid to the ladies
January Medal but by Sunday morning the Coupals Road course was back
in play when the men competed in their qualifying round to find a
pair to represent the club in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

Elsworth and Matt Thorpe as their 66½ beat all comers. Runners up
were Jim Thomson and Mark Pickup who were a further half shot clear
of Gordon Price and Derek Thomas. The overall results were:-

who left the course sporting a big smile. A nine iron shot at the
119 yards 8th hole carried the pin and spun back into the hole for
an ace.

The ladies winter foursomes event resulted in Lynn
Fish and Pauline Calmet being crowned as Champions following their
defeat of Shirley Andrews and Pam Ratford in the final. In a
parallel competition named the Cinderella Slipper Doreen Darbey and
Sue Carr took the top spot.
Sue Carr was in fine form again on Saturday when
she led out the ladies 'Mail on Sunday' team in their 1st round
fixture at Flempton. Her 6&5 win over Pauline Hawes set the
standard as Haverhill ladies recorded a magnificent win by a 3 &
1 margin. Mary Sail's 5 & 4 defeat of Nicky McMahon gave the
away team a two up lead which was immediately pegged back by Diane
Glasswell who piped Kathy Bowman on the last green. It needed anchor
player Wendy Wilderspin to return a result which she did, beating
Pippa Beak 2 & 1, to see the visitors through to the next round
of the competition.
Sunday's Suffolk Winter Alliance meeting at Bungay
was delayed due to frost so as to entertain a large field in the
daylight hours left the format was switched from 4BBB to foursomes.
This did not deter Haverhill's Steven Moye and Pat McGarr who went
on to record a winning 39 stableford points which was three clear of
the field.
