The club is run by a voluntary workforce guided by the club committee, we prepare the course ourselves and its not unusal to see the Club and Lady Captains whipping the dew of the greens before a competition.
We have a old wooden pavillion clubhouse with a bar and function room, mens and ladies changing rooms. We do have social events at the
clubhouse including Presentation night, Summer disco and quiz nights
throughout the year, we are currently planning a New Years Eve party.
We play on a nine hole inland links type course with 9 casual mens tees, 18 competition mens tees and 9 ladies competition tees. Although we have no bunkers or water on the course we do have very small greens, lots of out of bounds and even more gorse, which many shots are played over!
The competition tees are par 68 with a sss 66. We do have an ex
Professional Golfer as a member, Syer Shulver and he holds the course
record of 65!!!
The Green Fees are £5 during the week and £10 at weekends and Bank Holidays.

Powerplay Competition - August Bank Holiday Weekend 2010
The novelty of a powerplay golf competition is that the player has to nominate on the tee which of two flagged holes he intends to play to on the green. Penalty point deductions can also occur if a bad score is made so it is important to select the right flag at the right time or minus scores can be achieved. This format gave members at Beccles Golf Club an unusual mornings golf on Saturday 28th with some of the second flag placements in very difficult positions none moreso than that on the fifth green.
Despite all the difficulties faced, Rod Green totalled enough points to win the event playing some very steady golf. Willie White beat Dick Grieve in a countback to take second place. Thanks were expressed to Sam, Ann and Willie for their input in making the morning so enjoyable.
The President's Cup will be contested on Sat 4th Sept over 36 holes with the morning's 18 holes teeing off at 8-15

BECCLES v BUNGAY CHALLENGE August 24th 2010
Tuesday 24th saw the return leg of the Beccles v Bungay Challenge.... with the 1st home leg swaying towards the Beccles side the away leg was looking very tight... several new players were drafted in on the Bungay side including Club Secretary John Lunniss and Ray Neale, and on the Beccles side Roy Gaunt.
This leg saw the Beccles Captain Sam Cooper as a non -playing Captain due to recent surgery, but enjoyed the day walking round and supporting the team.
With a very strong wind, all the holes played with a cross wind making the course very difficult. Leading the teams out Bungay Club Captain paired with Steve Wright played Beccles Secretay Alan Ereira and Vice Captain James Cushing, after a very close fought match Lan & Steve took the match. The 2nd group out also had a few officers involved, Bungay's secretary John Lunniss playing with Ray Neale and Beccles President playing with playing partner Paul Cook, this match ended with Rod and Paul taking the honors. The 3rd match with Nigel and Chris against Ray & Ernie was very closely fought. Don & Peter took on the less experienced pairing of Roy & Tony but had a very enjoyable match winning quite convincingly..
The final group of Trevor & Paul had a hard fought match against the Beccles pairing of Ron & Jim, who had a convincing win. As with all the past matches it was declared an honorable draw in favour this leg to Bungay. Both Captains Len Bird & Sam Cooper thanked their teams and are looking forward to the first of the matches in May 2011. Sam thanked Bungay for their hospitality, Len and the green staff for the superb condition of the course, and Norman, Lisa, Cindy and all the staff for an excellent meal that followed the match.

The Barnby Swan Cup - 15th May 2010
The competition for the Club's largest trophy, the Barnby Swan Cup, which resembles the European Champions Cup, was contested at Beccles Golf Club on Sat 15th and produced some outstanding performances. The best of these was the winning score of Club Captain Willie White who won the trophy for the second year running. A sub 60 score is very rare in golf and Willie's score of 77-19-58 was indeed exceptional.
Three equal scores of nett 61 were next which would have been good enought to win the majority of competitions normally, but gained only 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. The countback gave these places to Jamie Allen (87-26-61), Niall Gill (71-10-61) and Rod Cooper (88-27-61) respectively.
The top 7 placed players all received handicap cuts and the top 16 equalled or bettered the course par, helped by the warm sunny morning and the excellent condition of the greens.
Club Vice Captain James Cushing thanked Sue for catering both at the mid week Beccles v Bungay match and again at todays competition and gave special mention to the work carried out on the greens by Michael.
The tee off for the David Downing Cup will be at 8-15 on Sat 22nd

BECCLES v Bungay Friendly Match - 11th May 2010
Yesterday saw the first of two matches home and away for the Beccles v Bungay Friendly Golf Match.
This year 5 pairs took part from each Club. Leading off proceeding Bungay Captain Len Bird tee' d off with his ball finishing in bushes near the green, the following tee shot was Beccles Captain Sam Cooper who also proceeded to put the ball straight into the bushes. Luckily things did improve for both players. The competitive spirit shown by all players, made the overall match closely contested, with both sides winning in a couple of games. It was decided that the result would be an honorable draw.
The teams were treated to a sit down 3 course meal, prepared by Sue Edwards and helped by her daughter Apryl. During the speech's that followed Ladies Captain Sam Cooper thanked green keeper Mike Jolly for cutting and preparing the greens, this was also acknowledged by Bungay Captain Len Bird, who had several compliments from his players on the excellent condition of the greens. Thanks also went to Club Captain Willie White for working the very busy bar.
Both teams are now looking forward to the 2nd match at Bungay on Tuesday 24th August.

MAY STABLEFORD - May 8th 2010
The field for the 18 hole stableford held at Beccles Golf Club on Sat 8th was somewhat depleted due to the members who had spent the week on a golfing holiday in Lincolnshire deciding they had played enough golf recently, a decision firmly backed no doubt by their wives. Another wet and windy day was also a contributing factor to the smaller than usual field.
It was left to two of the younger members to fight for the top spot with both Niall Gill and Ben Cable posting scores of 38 points, the countback giving the victory to Niall. Club Secretary Alan Ereira was third with 36 points.
The draw for prize winning pairs after the event saw 4th placed Paul Cook (33 points) coming out of the hat with Niall Gill to earn them the winners prize with a combined score of 71 points.
Members thanked Bert for the tasty after match refreshments.
On Sat 15th the tee off for the Barnby Swan Cup will take place at 8.15.

MAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND RESULTS
PICCADILLY PUTTER - Sat May 1st 2010
The Piccadilly Putter competition saw a smaller than usual field competing at Beccles Golf Club on Saturday May 1st but produced two excellent scores from the winner and runner up.
Niall Gill didnt leave many shots out on the course when he posted 72-11-61 to win the event and was closely followed by runner up Jim Redpath on 78-16-62. It was ironic that Jim's handicap was reduced by 2 shots by coming second while Niall was cut by 1 shot.
David Wells was placed third with his 78-12-66 and Dick Grieve was the only other player to break nett 70 (95-27-68).
One of the most amusing happenings during the morning was the subsequent disqualification of Paul Cook, Christian Lever and Grant Bartlett who somehow failed to realise that hole 12 should be played after hole 11. This followed Paul's problem a few weeks back when drawn to tee off on hole 3 he misread the number and joined the trio on hole 8, to suffer disqualification again. Suggestions of Spec Savers were rife!.
Club Captain Willie White thanked Shirley for the after competition refreshments and congratulated the Tolly team for their excellent performance against Rookery last weekend.
Members are asked to note that the Pat Gill trophy scheduled for 15th will now be played later in the year and will be replaced on the 15th by the Barnby Swan Cup.
On Sat 8th an 18 hole stableford singles will tee off at 8-15 with pairs being drawn after the competition to decide the prizes.

SUNDAY STABLEFORD
The field contesting the Sunday Stableford at Beccles Golf Club on Sunday 2nd May was somewhat reduced by the weather with a cold wind and heavy showers spoiling the morning.
David Neech won the event scoring 34 points and increasing his lead in the Sunday order of merit table. Runner up, after countback was Ladies Captain Sam Cooper with Ron Walding third both scoring 31 points.
Ladies Captain Sam Cooper thanked David for preparing the greens and James Cushing for the very welcoming warm refreshments after the event.

2010 Tolly Cobbold

The Beccles Golf Club Tolly team didnt have to travel far this year being drawn against Lowestoft's Rookery Park Golf Club in the first round played on Sunday 25th.
After the mornings 18 holes, Beccles had performed well and were only 2 holes down of the 72 holes contested. The afternoon session didnt go quite as well with the match being won by Rookery by 15 holes. Most notable performance of the day went to Alan Ereira and his young partner Eddie Bowles, playing in his first Tolly, winning both their morning and afternoon matches.
Club Captain Willie White thanked his team as well as caddies and members for their support on the day. Thanks also went to David Neech of City Fish for sponsoring the team and their shirts.

2010 Lillian Allen Cup
The Lillian Allen Cup, one of the "most wanted" trophies at the club, was contested on Sat24th by a large field of competitors. Lillian and her late husband Ken set the club on the road to the success it enjoys today by their dedication and hard work spread over many years. Sadly for the first time since the trophys inauguration, Lillian was unable to attend to present her trophy to the winner but her grandson Niall was on hand to perform the honours. Members sent their love and best wishes to Lillian and her family.
Jim Preston had the worst start possible when his first tee shot of the day travelled only 10 yards on the par 5 fifth hole, and later inadvertantly caused his ball to move on the green when addressing his putt. He overcame these problems with some excellent golf and posted the winning score of 81-18-63 to win the coveted trophy. David Wells (76-12-64) and Chris Peach (77-13-64) took second and third places respectively after being separated by countback. The morning was completed by Julies delicious ploughmans lunch.
On Sat 1st May the Piccadilly Putter comp will tee off at 8-15.

The Wood family have long been associated with the golf club and Peter and Carol attended as always to present the trophy which was in memory of Peter's mother and father along with the sponsored prizes.Peter's son Andrew, who began his golfing career at Beccles, was unable to attend due to work commitments in Angola.
The event was won by Rod Green with 41 points, 5 clear of runner up Dick Grieve (36) who pushed club Captain Willie White (36) into third place after a countback.
Thanks were expressed to Carol and Peter for their continued sponsorship of the event and for attending to present the trophy and prizes. Thanks also went to Jula for the refreshments.

CLUB NEWS - February 2010 - 28th February
The Feb monthly medal due to be played on 6th Feb was finally contested on Sat 27th due to previous postponments caused by frost and snow throughout the month. The golf course normally drains quite well but recent heavy and prolonged rain caused problems on several greens and even some fairways were soggy. Club Captain Willie White welcomed ladies Captain Sam Cooper back to the clubhouse after her recent hospitalisation and thanked Jula for the refreshments.

CLUB NEWS - January 2010
Due to recent bad weather, golf has been scarce at Beccles Golf Club in 2010. It therefore delighted members that the monthly medal was able to tee off on Sat 23rd.
The lay off must have had something to do with one of the competitors producing one of the best rounds of golf seen for a long time when Rod Green shot 75-15-60 to win the medal. His round included 2 chip ins for birdies from well off the greens and he at last mastered what had become his nemesis 8th hole. With only the 18th to play he needed a par 4 to record the magical score of nett 59 but pressure prevailed and he scored a bogey 5, still a superb round of near faultless golf and well deserving his 2 shot handicap cut!.
Mike Webb was also at his best earning the runner up spot with 88-23-65 beating Brian Lever on countback (76-11-65)
Thanks were expressed to Linda for her warming refreshments.
The mornings event was followed by the first ladies competition since November. An enjoyable 9 hole was won by ladies Captain Sam Cooper with Ann Brett second and Jenny Edmonds third.
On Sunday, completing a busy weekend, the first order of merit event of the year was held. After some computer malfunction in the scoring, the winner was finally declared as ladies Captain Sam Cooper, completing a double after her success on Saturday. She also collected the "slow play tortoise" trophy for being the last back to the clubhouse. Club Vice Captain James Cushing who had originally been declared the winner before the computer error was noticed, was
relegated to the runner up spot followed by Ron Walding in third.
Thanks went to Sam and David for their work on the greens and Sam for the delicious refreshments.
On Sat 30th the second round of the winter foursomes will tee off at 8.15.
