Set on the western outskirts of beautiful Suffolk town of Bury St Edmunds the Bury St Edmunds Golf Club can be seen from the busy A14 on the left going East toward Ipswich.

There is a mature 18 hole course and a particularly good 9 hole course on site.

The 18-hole championship course often hosts regional competitions. The course was created in 1924, the original design was by the first British Ryder Cup team captain Ted Ray, winner of an Open and a US Open.

A wholesale redesign of the course and a new clubhouse became necessary during the sixties because of the construction of the A14(then the A45). The new-look Bury St Edmunds course was formally opened in May 1969 Today's measurement of 6,676 off the white tees means that it is still one of the longer courses in Suffolk.

Opened in October 1991 the 9-hole course is a high quality and a popular Pay-&-Play facility.

Over a 30 plus year period we have had regular visits to the Club which benefits from a thriving local economy and very little competition. All Saints Golf Hotel & Spa has struggled over the years and now on its 5th or 6th new owner. The other competition in area is the delightful Flempton Golf Club a top quality 9 hole venue that is a real pleasure to play.

Bury St Edmunds Golf course is a challenge with some really good long holes. I have always struggled with the stroke index 1, 16th hole a long par four with a big green, quite a tight driving hole and a gentle but long incline to the green. It will certainly have a marked effect on day if you play it well . The other big thing about this course is that somebody must have loved trees and planted them very close together a real tough problem if you stray off the fairway on a regular basis . The most recent visit was with the Suffolk Golf Captains in 2016 and you could see that there had been some very good work on the course particularly thinning out some of the trees. The greens have always been big and true. Like most courses there are holes that can be classed a bit boring. The 12th is a horrible looking driving hole a longish par 4 that flattens out to a two tier/ level hole. A blind uphill drive with a hedge on the right and a strategically placed bunker. The 18th is a good par 5 that finishes in front of the Clubhouse. The first time I played this hole in 1986 my third shot flew over the green to hit my new boss’s big mercedes on the bonnet in the car park and yes it was out of bounds and no i didn’t tell my boss, well not until now anyway.

When I played the great 9 hole course it was 25 years since I played as a guest of the Captain at the opening in 1991. It was a good challenge then and has just developed into a really good 9 hole course.

The clubhouse has recently been refurbished and the outside patio area is a real improvement. My father was a member there and in 2014 the club hosted his wake. The service was of the highest order.

Our view - Try it, it’s not like the pine tree lined course up the road at Thetford and not as quirky as Flempton but well worth a visit.
