Monthly Course Report January 2008

GREENS

Disease is a challenge again, as it always is this time of year. We sprayed the greens on both courses earlier this month; however our next application may be trickier to apply in view of the recent weather.

We have sprayed the USGA greens on the Old course with an application of moss killer to continue the control of the silver moss which became so invasive on the tenth green in the past.

The Mathern course greens have been playing very well this winter after the intensive work carried out on the surfaces during the work period in which each half of the course was closed for tee and bunker reconstruction.

The few temporary greens that have been employed on occasions this winter have performed well after a combination of a summer of strong grass growth, being enlarged, and being cut with pedestrian mowers.

PROJECT

The bunkers on the 16th and 17th fairways were turfed before the contractors finished for their Christmas shut-down fortnight, the small piles of top soil remaining in these areas will be removed for use on other areas close to that location. One of our main controlling factors with the project going ahead this time of year is the restriction of material transportation to the absolute essential, therefore we have not removed these piles to the borrow pit area between the 16th and 17th only having to track it back out in the near future.

The contractors returned on site after Christmas, however the areas prepared for work during there absence, namely the 14th and 15th fairway bunkers, are again to wet to work at present. As a result they are continuing work at the top section of the course, starting to shape the fairway bunkers for the 4th and 5th holes, this work will continue when the rain clears long enough for the ground to dry. The next task that is planned while we are waiting for the ground to dry a bit will be the removal of the mound which is what remains of to old 3rd green

As we have reached the end of the year I have collated the yearly rainfall figures. It will be no surprise that it has been another wet year. I was, however surprised to see that this years rainfall total of 1131.8mm is close to the 1153.4mm experienced last year, however, the periods of heavy rain are quite contrasting from this year to last as shown in the attached graph.
