Lady Captain’s Day

Lady Captain, Margaret Hills, held her Captain’s Day last Tuesday and was greeted with a stylishly decorated buggy depicting her interests, apart from golf, of walking, bird watching etc. Much hard work was put in, especially by Norma Humphrey, to turn the buggy into a carriage fit for a queen, let alone the Lady Captain of Newton Green.

Much fun was had as approximately 40 ladies played various formats with the aid of a vital piece of string – always useful when in trouble, or to finish off a short putt. Ladies also had their skills tested when confronted with having to wear either cricket or oven gloves on various holes. This was followed by a buffet lunch and prize giving:

Winners over 18 holes Jennie Leech and Debbie Howlett 48 points
Second Julie Iveson and Rosemary Thomson 45 points
Front 9 Alice Taylor and Alison Coleman 20 points ocb
Back 9 Glenys Grove and Marion Glumart 23 points
Nearest the pin Sue Lockwood

The women of the Aldous family have every reason to feel pleased with themselves. Mum Claire, handicap 14, has qualified to take part in a regional final of the LGU Gold Medal qualifying competition at King’s Lynn on July 2nd. Good luck to Claire – it would be lovely to see her reach the national final. Daughter Eloise, who is a member of the Club’s flourishing junior section and plays off a handicap of 36, recently came 3rd in Suffolk Girl’s County Competition for handicaps 25+.

The N.G. Ladies Section Weston team have won 16 games out of the 20 played and are waiting to hear whether they have reached the play offs and possible promotion to a higher league in this County competition. The team members are Liz Ward (Captain), Norma Humphrey, Claire Aldous, Mary Jenkins, Sally Cade, Margaret Hills and Jennie Leech.

TIM’S A WINNER…
AS SUFFOLK GOLF DUO SECURE TURKISH TRIP

Newton Green’s PGA Golf Professional Tim Cooper finishes off his winning week in grand style. Tim, together with Bill Byford, Sales Director of Lavenham Press and a member of Newton Green Golf Club, had a blistering team score of 7 under par to win the East Regional PGA National Pro-Am Final which was played at Kings Lynn on Wednesday. The winning pair beat 72 other teams to lift the title and the Grand Final will be played at Antalya Golf Club,Turkey from the 30th November to the 4th December. However, the competition had attracted in total more than 100,000 entries.

Tim hailed this win as one of the highlights of his career. He revealed a key tactic in the victory was keeping his partner in the dark after a blistering front nine saw them at five under and at the top of the leaderboard.

Today, Tim is delighted to collect his new Peugeot 308 from his sponsors Howlett of Lavenham who have supported him for the last three years and are delighted to be associated with Tim’s successful results.

The Social side of Golf
Throughout the year we hold social golfing events to bring the new and longer-term members together and provide additional leisure facilities for the members, their friends and families.

We have purely social events such as Quiz evenings, a Bridge club, Theme dinners, Casino nights, Race nights and various other gatherings all at very reasonable cost for the members and their guests.

Golfing social events such as the Foxes and Rabbits night, the Bangers and Mash evening are lighthearted sessions and have a golfing competition followed by food and are usually very popular.

High - Low handicap competitions are organised where pairs are drawn from one high and one low handicap golfer and they play together in a usually keenly contested competition.

Guest days and Pro-Ams are organised for both Ladies and Gents and you are able to invite others to play our course for the day and enjoy a dinner afterwards.

We have a thriving mixed section where competitions are held regularly with pairs being drawn from the ladies and gents section to play in a number of club and social competitions.

Once a month we have a shotgun start on Sunday morning and the clubhouse is a full and busy sight after these competitions where you will be drawn, on some occasions, to play with other members. This is a good opportunity to mix with and get to know other members.

We hold friendly matches against other clubs and play away matches on their courses followed by a meal at a very low cost and these are very enjoyable sessions.

You can of course 'just come and play golf' at virtually any time. We do reserve the tees on Tuesday mornings for the Ladies and Sunday mornings for the Gentlemen. Other reservations are displayed at the club or you can always check with our resident Professional Tim Cooper or his assistant Oliver Rush.

The club professional golfer is a very good teaching pro for beginners or improvers and is always on call for game improvement or correction lessons.

Our catering is by Sue Cummings who provides food most of the day including full lunches and special occasion lunches such as Mothers Day and Christmas Lunches for friends and families. Our Clubhouse is available for bookings to members of the club.

Members will make you welcome and be happy to play with you to integrate you into golf and the club.

The Ladies Section
Our Ladies section consists of approx 100 members. The Ladies pay an equal annual subscription and have equal rights within the club.
There are representatives on most of the committees of the club elected at the AGM.

A separate Ladies committee also runs the Ladies section under the LGU rules.

Ladies morning is Tuesday mornings when tees are reserved until 12.30pm. In return the tees are reserved for the Gentlemen on Sunday Mornings when most of the major club competitions for gents are played. After 12 noon the ladies can and do play.

Our business ladies play their competitions on Saturdays.

The Ladies section organises most of the Mixed competitions that are very popular.

Friendly matches against other clubs are played in Lady Veterans and mixed sections.

To establish a handicap a new member requires 3 cards signed by a player with or who has had a handicap. The score is immaterial.

If you need a playing partner or if you want someone to mark a card for you please contact the Lady Captain, a committee member or the Ladies Secretary who will be happy to help you.

The Seniors Section
We have a thriving seniors section of males over 55 who play most Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings. They have regular competitions between themselves and against other clubs as well as an infamous Christmas dinner. Ask the manager for details.

The Old & Bold
This section of our club caters for our elder statesmen to play golf, usually on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. They hold their own competitions during these periods and generally look after each other very well. Don't play them for money!!

The Junior Section
We have at present a thriving junior section and they meet and play every Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm during the summer months and Sunday afternoon as well as competitions during their holidays from school. We have some superb junior golfers and they represent the club in various competitions.
