Casual Play Limitations on Summer Weekend Competition Days
____________________________________________________________
Commencing Saturday 14 July, the "No Play Before Competition" rule will cease for Summer weekend competitions. Casual play is permitted prior to and after Summer Weekend Competitions subject to the following limitations:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Play may start from the 1st tee only until 1500 (3.00pm).
2. No play will be permitted to start from 30 mins prior to the first competition tee time until 15 mins after the final competition tee time.
3. On Saturdays, competition tee times will include the period 1100 until 1130 which is reserved for Business Ladies' competitions.
4. Thus, on Saturdays, on a Summer weekend competition day which starts at 0730, casual play will not be permitted to start between 0700 and 1145. Similarly, on Sundays, on a Summer weekend competition day which starts at 0730, casual play will not be permitted to start between 0700 and 1100.
This is shown in graphic form below:
|
5. Competition play, including afternoon competition play, will have priority over casual play, and casual players must give way to competition players immediately if there is a risk that they will hold up competition play. This will be enforced by the Course Marshall, and any players not complying with this rule will be asked to leave the course and will be reported to the Handicap & Competition Committee for further action.
6. Additionally, players found on the course in contradiction of these rules will be required to leave the course and will be reported to the Handicap & Competition Committee for further action.
North to South
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Club Secretary, Diane Hopkins has migrated from Royal Cromer Golf Club on the North Norfolk coast to Thetford Golf Club in the south of the county.
Diane who had been at Royal Cromer for three years since moving down from Catterick in North Yorkshire. said,
"I had three great years at Royal Cromer but was looking for a move nearer to Cambridge to co-ordinate with my husbands job, I was very fortunate to move between two of the best Clubs in the county".
Both courses have great reputations which makes my job easier to sell a course of such quality. Cromer with its glorious coastline and Thetford with its wonderful trees and wildlife.
At Thetford we are tackling the challenge of declining membership numbers head on and I am pleased to say that in addition to our need for Full Members (at a discounted rate for the rest of this year) the Committee have approved a new and radical membership category for 2008.
Called Breckland it allows full use of the clubs facilities and to play golf limited only by the amount the member chooses to pay. This provides a high level of choice to members who do not have the time or resources to play regular golf or wish to join a second club or are local golfers who play courses that are shut for most of the winter.
Thetford are very proud of their achievement in getting the ‘Golf Mark’ in Junior Golf and offering free golf memberships for the under 16’s.
I am looking forward to a great golfing season here at Thetford, getting to know our members and hopefully receiving a visit or two from old friends. They will be extremely welcome.

Mens Section
The Mens Section plays friendly matches at ordinary and senior level and enters three County competitions against other Clubs.
These are:
1. MYHILL TROPHY
Mainly for single figure handicap golfers. Format is 36 holes foursomes. The team is traditionally managed by the Club Captain.
2. CULLINGTON CUP
Handicaps 10 to 18. Format is 36 hole foursomes. The team is traditionally managed by the Club Vice Captain.
3. BARNARD TROPHY
For members over 55, any handicap. Format is 18 hole foursomes. In 2004 the team will be managed by David Horsburgh.
4. SCRATCH LEAGUE
For very low handicaps. In 2004 the team was organised by Rocky Hughes.
Any male member of the Club who wishes to be considered for selection for any of the teams should watch the noticeboard in the changing room and enter their name on the appropriate sheet. A series of trials will be arranged. We particularly need low handicappers to put their names forward.
Mens Seniors Section
A reminder about this year's rule changes for team matches. If you are unable to play:
1. It is your duty to seek a replacement with the first available name on the reserves list;
2. The replacement will be selected to play in the return fixture;
3. Notify the Match Captain of any last minute withdrawal.
The Winter Pairs competition is in progress with the final due on 22nd March.
The Mens Senior Section is open to all members over 55 and play informally on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from approximately 8.00am. Anyone looking for a game will be most welcome.
We have notification of the National 2, 4 and 6 man competitions. Handicaps are generally up to 16. Anyone interested watch the old Toby's noticeboard and let Andy know.
Remember - Failure is a temporary position. Only when you give up is it permanent

Juniors Section
Thetford's Junior Section is growing, but compared to other Clubs in the area it is quite small. We have 45 junior members of which there are only 4 girls.
The Section is run by a small group of volunteer organisers, which forms the Junior Committee.
The aim of the organizers is to represent the Juniors, to ensure the smooth running of competitions, arrange and organise teams to represent the Club in outside competitions, arrange social activities, matches and coaching.
The membership of the Junior Section is diverse, ranging from a small group (approx 10) of very active golfers, including one county player, all of whom are improving and are good ambassadors for Thetford Golf Club. We also have a large number of juniors without a handicap that do not enter the competitions, who will be the golfers of tomorrow.
With the help of Gary Kitley and his team, we hope to involve these young golfers in competitions suited to their needs, thereby encouraging their development.
Organising the Junior Section takes a lot of commitment, particularly in the Summer months - when more time is spent walking around supporting the Juniors than playing golf yourself.
BRIDGE CLUB
Bridge sessions are held on Monday evenings in the clubhouse starting at 7pm. Members of all standards are most welcome and anyone interested should contact Keith Eldred.
"We look forward to extending you
a warm welcome to Thetford Golf Club!"
